Just this past week, I managed to squeeze in some time to catch up with Moullinex (Luis) and Xinobi (Bruno), two very interesting and quite humble guys making a stir on the world stage with their eclectic brand of funky disco & electro house. Both from the Discotexas label and Gomma Records of Germany and Portugal, they will be on a U.S. Tour this month and stopping in Vegas on Wednesday April 28th @ Hypnotic Lounge. It's not too often we get international Artists/DJ's playing more intimate club venues here in Las Vegas so we urge everyone to come out and share this amazing night with us! Up and comers, Jacuzzi Hi-Dive will be performing a live set with their new drummer as well as DJ sets from Waves and disco house extraordinaire, Epique. Needless to say, it's going to be a bangin' Wednesday night and we would love to see you there! So, on with the interview. Don't forget to say "Hi" at the show, I'm sure they won't mind one bit.

Being Both from Portugal, how did you start collaborating?
M: Believe it or not, we were in the same (tiny) country but our first contacts were via myspace. Bruno was in a rock band and i really liked a track, and i contacted them regarding a remix. From then on we started pushing each other.
X: Just as Moullinex said, that's how we really started. Then we also started to make music together, we, with other friends, built up the Discotexas gang and now we even play in the same band.

Growing up, what influences in your youth shaped the music that you make today?
M: From Pink Floyd to Chico Buarque, and Stevie, Herbie, so many others...
X: I normally speak about friends and movies as my main actual influences. Obviously there's a lot of music involved. But back in the days of my youth, my father, without knowing it, is probably the greatest responsible for my passion for music. He had great music at home, he would watch silly Top 40 hits tv shows with me and he actually taught me how to play the guitar.

We're always curious to know people's first concerts. What was yours?
M: My first 'concert' was in the Xmas party in my high school.. I was in a Ska-punk /HC band named 'Coxies'.. As in Coccix (the bone) and Pixies... We just played a single track but we rehearsed for ages. The lesson i learned from then was refraining from singing ever again.
X: My first memorable concert was maybe Guns N' Roses when they we're doing that Use Your Illusion Tour. What a Circus. Actually, Axl made it even more memorable arguing with 50,000 angry portuguese about if he should or should not proceed with the show after how he felt on stage. ahah.

Both known for your prowess in the Studio, could you give us an idea of what your creative process is like?
M: I always start with a chord progression, then i add layers and layers, usually drums, bass, then other keys and guitars, etc.. Lately i sit down with (the other) Luis, who plays bass, and we improvise a lot in the studio. The best parts are then arranged and polished. Then it's all about making things simple again.. And then the remaining 20% of the track (mixing, fine-tuning the drums, bass, etc) takes 80% of the time...
X: My main ideas come at night, at the time that I should go to sleep. Then, I got to bed really late. But seriously I normally play around with loops and melodies for a while until I get some nice hook, then, I add some drums and percussion and, for the end, a strong bass line. A thing that normally takes a lot to get it a nice song structure.

Do you have any favorite pieces of gear in your studio?
M: A Roland Stage Echo unit is almost in every track I do. And my favourite synths are the Korg Mono/Poly and the Octave Cat SRM. My latest baby is a Fender Rhodes Mk I which my girlfriend gave me for my birthday. Best gift ever.
X: My Sennheiser Hd 25. That would be the last thing I would sell...

(Moullinex) When and how did your live band come about?
M: Actually it was a natural step, from composing 'live' in the studio to making things more organic. It's 200x the fun (and the work)
X:
With such an extensive catalog of work you've both done, is there anything that stands out as some of your personal favorites that others may overlook?
M: One of the most overlooked tracks from Bruno is his remix for Loose Shus' Threesome. It's really, really, good.
X: I really love my Loose Shus remix. Till the present day, I don't know where were my melody senses in the day I wrote some of those melodies. And still, I feel that the remix went really unnoticed. And Moullinex remix for Cut Copy, it got a lot of attention but I still don't understand why it didn't have a proper release side by side with the original and the other remixes.

On Touring in the United States versus Europe, Likes? Dislikes?
M: We've only played in NYC and Philly before, and we have no idea what to expect from this tour. All I can say is that we're really excited!
X: As Luís told, United States still are a mystery for us. And off course, I can't wait to know better.

With this exciting tour just ahead of you, Anything you were looking forward to do while you were here?
M: i'm gonna take a million pictures and probably set up a cheesy tour blog. I'm really interested in visiting things like the "World's biggest (fill in the blank)". and please give me pointers to guitar/keys pedal shops!
X: I just want to have fun, and enjoy the most I can. I'm not a good trip organizer, so i'll probably let myself to the "go with the flow" method. I think it is the best way to travel around when you don't have that much time to spend.

Xinobi, So you've played in a punk band and are into skateboarding? Do you still carry any elements of punk into your music and lifestyle?
X: Mhh, Let's put it this way, I've been to London in the past week, and I saved a really special time to hang out in a decent punk rock record store called All Ages. So it is something I love. I still feel that Punk Rock kind of ethics molded a lot of my personality, and although I'm not that involved in punk issues anymore I still feel is one of the most important thing in my life. Through punk rock ideals and "modus operandi" I've learned how to respect others individual freedom at the same time I have to express my ego to fulfill my dreams. That and getting the "know how" on how to be independent established the way I see, for example, Discotexas nowadays. And I think Discotexas is really punk rock without have direct connections with it. ahah.

Describe to us the vision and sound that encompasses Discotexas?
M: Unpretentious eclecticism, achieving originality and have fun doing it.
X: I can't put it better... Luís said it all.

Any personal goals for 2010?
M: hopefully finish an album, follow the Discotexas release calendar, decide on the right place to live.
X: Being able to write an Album and travel the world at the same time. I also might change to another house.

We know Germany and Portugal are hotbeds for great artists, are there any artists we should be looking out for?
M: in Portugal you should keep an eye on Social Disco Club, Tiago, Photonz, Mirror People.. in Germany, obviously the Gomma label, but also Permanent Vacation, Tensnake in Hamburg, Delusions of Grandeur in Berlin...
X: You should also check artists like Gala Drop, Dead Combo, Caveira, Paus.. all great bands based in Lisbon.

When you think of Las Vegas, name two things that come to mind.
M: Casinos and Blue Man Group. Sorry for being obvious. I can't wait, though.
X: I heard what happens there, stays there and there was this ZZ Top song... ahah, yes, two more clichés.

In a time where music and technology are almost seamlessly intertwined, Do you have any advise for aspiring Bands, Producers and DJ's trying to gain success much like yourselves?
M: enough with the "artist in a pedestal" attitude, it's all about switching positions between audience and musician. What's happening today already happened in the 70s, where you could watch your favorite band playing live from 10 inches away, only to switch positions with them the day after. Nowadays this model was re-born, but the stage is actually world-wide. Really good music making and promotional tools are available to everyone, many of them for free. So sometimes maybe you should take a break from that raging ADD of yours, pack the essentials and isolate yourself to try and make something of your own. X: Just do what you like and try to be recognized by who you are. Don't pretend to be. Use the best internet can give you to promote yourself but avoid becoming a super-spammer. Honesty and Humbleness should prevail over the barbaric media that surround us.

Database-Live! Tuesday March 23rd

Currently on tour and trekking across North America, Brazil's Database of Southern Fried Records (Fatboy Slim, Crookers) will be making a stop in Vegas and performing at downtown's premier hotspot, Beauty Bar. Chances are this may be your first time hearing about them, but don't let it dissuade you from the fact that they are a definite must see. In Brazil, they've played some of the country’s biggest festivals, including TIM '08 (with the Klaxons, Kanye West, MGMT, Junior Boys) Haagen Dazs Mix Music Festival '08 (Uffie, Feadz, Yuksek, The Glimmers and VHS or Beta), Fashion Week as well as appearances on MTV Brazil, and other major festivals.

Today Database is one of the biggest electronic names in Brazil. Recently co-writing a single with Brooklyn's French Horn Rebellion called "Beaches & Friends," not to mention sharing an unbelievable roster with the rest of the artists represented by industry top-dogs, Windish Agency (Z-Trip, Miike Snow, DJ Mehdi, Fever Ray).

In support of Database, Jacuzzi Hi-Dive will also be doing their debut live performance, with the addition of newest member Jose Torres. Down and Derby resident DJ, Shr3d will also be in attendance holding it down on the 1's & 2's. With so many tough choices on any given weekend night here in Las Vegas, It's due time for something to look forward to early in the week. This coming Tuesday we'll party like it's Friday!

Jacuzzi Hi-Dive | On The Rise!

Say "hello" to Vegas's latest rising stars, Jacuzzi Hi-Dive. They’ve set out on a mission to synthesize past, present, and future to create something that aims on not only transcending the 21st century, but also raising the bar for the current state of our generations creativity.

Jacuzzi Hi-Dive essentially started back in 2007. It’s core consisting of two east-coast expats, Aily Iglesias and Aram Blassingame. In the 3 years since this project's inception, 2 of which were spent honing in on a solid creative direction, It wasn't until recently things started to come together for the duo. They've recently released several remixes, not to mention their super fun and eclectic mixtape "Dancefloor Linguistics" as well as two promotional tracks from their upcoming album "Return Of Nibiru," out this summer on Transient Legendary.

They've put together a stellar live performance with the help of Gold Fronts bass player, Jose Torres and will be playing a string of shows this Spring. Their debut on March 23rd at Beauty Bar opening for Database (Sao Paolo, Brazil). Proceeding that will be performances in Los Angeles, a gig with Moullinex and Xinobi in April, as well as two confirmed dates in New York in May. Updates can be found on their myspace.

Variety Lab returns with its fantastic new record Team Up!

My first thoughts upon initially hearing it where flashes of a technicolor collage. The seamless blending of genres throughout the album is a masterpiece in it's own right. Variety Lab seems like the perfect name for a project so diverse, spanning tropicalia, electro, indie, acid jazz and disco.

"We Should Be Dancing," the first single off "Team Up" features vocals from David Bartholomé (lead singer of Belgian band Sharko) and is fully successful in creating a captivating track accompanied by a clever whimsical video.

Variety Lab, is the alias of Theirry Bellia. As in the past Bellia, alone, put Team Up! together, but he didn't forget to emphasize his friends' assistance in the process. His henchmen from the French band Orwell(Jérôme Didelot and Alexandre Longo, aka Cascadeur and winner of the 2008 Inrockuptibles CQFD prize) have made considerable contributions along with a host of instruments, weird objects and talented friends.

Just in, a fresh new remix of a track recently released by Brooklyn bass king B.Rich. The Make Me Dance EP is now available on AC Slater's label Party Like Us Records. This is first remix produced by Las Vegas indie/dance outfit Jacuzzi Hi-Dive, and takes a more alternative approach to the track incorporating some groovy synth lines and nicely layered pads to create an atmosphere totally different than the original.

This past Saturday, we caught up with DJ Z-Trip, an impressively humble and down to earth guy. Just recently he placed first in this year's "America's Best DJ" and was in Vegas for the awarding. It was hosted at Ghostbar in The Palms and a great aesthetic fit for the awarding. Luckilly, I got a chance to do a brief interview before he headed downstairs for his set at Rain for Perfecto Saturdays. He spun 2 hours of straight knowledge, his scratch technique totally on point, mashing in and out of so many different styles it really made you appreciate his talent.

Well first off, Congratulations! With this new accomplishment of being named America's Best DJ, what does the future hold?

I plan on taking opportunities as they come, that's way I've always done it and I feel really blessed with all things that've come my way. I'll be heading to Europe in a couple weeks, basically just trying to soak it all in right now. last year I came in 4th, so feel really honored to be awarded this achievement.

So you just recently just finished up a string of dates in Canada, what's your take on their music scene and how it varies with the U.S. or even Vegas for that matter?

Well it's interesting, I think in Canada, people are a little bit more open minded. They really put themselves in a position to be more perceptive and conscious as to what is going on as far as music and art is concerned. I have a great time every time I'm there, I'll be in Vancouver on the 17th of this month. In Vegas, the crowd is really transient ,so as a DJ you kind of have to cater to what the crowds immediate expectation of what they want to hear. With all the casino's and hotels, it more or less dwarfs the local scene which is usually the backbone of any good music community.

Can you think back on all your gigs over the past decade, was there any specific performance you felt was pivotal in helping catapult you to your current status as an International DJ?

That's a great question, It never really was just one performance. I think It was all of them, whether they were for 50 people or 5000. For anyone that wants success in whatever the do, it's not easy, you really have to be ready and committed. I started out in L.A. a long time ago just doing parties with my friends and it kinda just took off from there. I love doing what i do, and like I said before, it really is a blessing. The past few years I've been to all over the place. Europe, Argentina, Brazil, Australia, Asia, and obviously there are going to be some places where people aren't going to be as familiar with my music and that's where I just put it out there for people to hear.

Coming from L.A. and having an extensive Hip Hop influenced background, any comments on the current state of Hip Hop?

Currently, A lot of Artist's are lacking the right motives, it's hard to say where it will go. But don't get me wrong, There's still a huge amount of great stuff out there, it's just not as accessible to as what to you would hear on the radio or in most clubs. Overall, think there needs to be more conscious artists and material out there.

In between touring, have you been working on any new projects? Should we be looking out for a new album in the near future?

I've been spending a lot of time trying to reinvigorate myself, when you've been doing things a long time you kind of get in this mode and sometimes it's hard to break out of. I just finished up a 7 day cleanse, lost some weight, stopped eating meat. Basically trying to get a clean perspective all together so to speak. I've been working with Shepard Fairey on a project, updating my website, and looking forward to some dates I've got in a couple weeks in London, Amsterdam and Paris.

For some last words, any advise for aspiring DJ's and Producers?

I think the most important advice I've got is is that your motives have to be right. Genuine motives can get you to the right place if you want them to. I know it seems like a cliche nowadays but Individuality is really important, you really have to take time to develop a sound and style that's yours.

BEACHES & FRIENDS TOUR: LAS VEGAS

French Horn Rebellion, a NYC based indie synth pop duo are currently on tour with Sao Paulo, Brazil based DJ/Production duo Database and are coming to Las Vegas in support of their "BEACHES AND FRIENDS" EP!

Some may not know, but FHR are brothers (Rob & David), and that half of FHR (David) was the producer of MGMT's debut EP that helped catapult them to their current success. Needless to say.. the music speaks for itself, it's amazing and equally as fun. Not only to just listen to, but dance to as well!

As Database, Lucio and Yuri have built quite the worldwide following, and have been rocking parties, shows, and festivals throughout North & South America in the past couple years. Previously they have shared the stage with many highly regarded artists including The Twelves, Kanye West, MGMT, and VHS or Beta just to name a few. This is a group known for its praise of French house, worshiping artists like Daft Punk, Cassius and Les Rhythmes Digitales.

Las Vegas based DJ/Producer, Bass & Treble will also be spinning an eclectic DJ set to get the party started and vibe flowing. Get ready for some funky soulful sounds from generations past and present.

There's no dress code, so come as you are, have some drinks, have some fun and get your photo taken by Kid Scott! Photos will be available on his Site. This will be the first event we've thrown at The Square Apple and we're all crossing our fingers that the party turns out be a success. We all just wanna have a great time. The Return Of Nibiru

It's been over a year since Aily has graced us with a new track but low and behold! She's just finished up her new single Shoes that will be her forthcoming release, tentatively titled The Return Of Nibiru.

I think it's apparent her style has blossomed over the the past 5 years into something a little more experimental as far as her prior work is concerned. This is the first track that she has unveiled that has incorporated a more beat driven structure, with layers of analog synth, vocoders, and a lounge meets afterhours dance floor kind of vibe.

It's been a while since her first single "Comfortably Numb" came out back in 2005 while still based out of Orlando but has since then released a few tracks intermittently over the course of the following years. It hasn't been until recently that she has gotten back on the saddle and has been working with a few different musicians, producers and friends to join her in creating the rest of the songs that will make up her forthcoming release.

Shoes was a track that TL's very own Aram Blassingame (Bass & Treble) produced over a period of a few days back in late May/early June. More or less, it just sat for a while until getting revamped with Aily's vocal tracking with the addition of the backing vocoder tracks that was hammered out in less than 15 minutes, back on one of those late nights in June.

Weekend In Review

So this past weekend's Hard Summer Fest was a complete failure, getting shut down less than 2 hours in. Only being able to squeeze in opening performances by Ed Banger's Busy P and Crystal Castles. To me, the synopsis was fairly simple. In all reality, they basically just sold way too many tickets. With almost 20,000 people showing up to a venue that had a capacity of 17,800, it was complete mayhem. Kids were jumping over the railings from the second level twenty feet below to the VIP floor section, triggering the fire marshals to halt the show with the LAPD and SWAT eventfully showing up to send everyone home at midnight (after 2 hours of waiting). What garbage! With ticket sales summing up to at least $1.2 million, I'm sure every attendee feels like they were ripped off in a major way. But there's light at the end of the tunnel, refunds are available from Ticketmaster and Groovetickets and should be posted to the credit card they were purchased with.

Sunday on the other hand, was a much better day. Started out the afternoon at the High Top Fade Binary Pool Party @ The Standard in downtown Los Angeles. It was the perfect place to hang on gorgeous Sunday afternoon, making me really wish there something like that in Vegas. Don't get me wrong, there are lots of pool parties at the hotel/casinos here but all lack character and subtle aesthetics. A great lineup including France's DATA. played from 2PM - 8PM, keeping the vibe fresh and upbeat.

Made it back to Hollywood just before 9pm to eat some food, nap, and make the 2 block jaunt from our hotel on Hollywood & Vine to Bardot, where Dim Mak was doing the Banana Split party. The place was packed but thanks to a certain someone, totally got to skip the line and the cover. DJ AM, Busy P blazed through really fun sets but I think Paul Devro stole the show as far as repetoire goes. He was holdin' it down heavy. Check him out on Mad Decent. Oh yea, Wil.I.Am showed up, a few ppl got pics with him but for the most part nobody paid him any attention. It was a fairly amusing moment.

As you can see, the lineup for this summer's HARD Festival at the Forum is a sure success, with some of the biggest names in the electro, house, and hip hop this year.

Last year's HARD Summer 2008 with headliners like MSTRKRFT and N.E.R.D. was a huge hit but this years event definitely raises the bar. With Performances by Underworld, Chromeo, A-Trak, Rye Rye, Crookers, Steve Aoki and others, it's gonna be nonstop beatdroppin' crunk madness.

Ticket's are sure to sell out prior to the night of the party so scoop them up if you plan on attending. Tickets start at $70 per person on GrooveTickets and $75 per person on Ticketmaster. The only difference other than the price is Will Call being the only available way to retain your tickets after purchase with Groovetickets. Ticketmaster has an option for printable tickets but it's approximately $25 more if you are getting anything more than one ticket.

I'll be staying at The Standard on Sunset. Let's hope this week fly's by. Any excuse to get out of the scorching Vegas heat is more than enough to get me excited for a weekend in L.A. partying and squeezing in some much needed beach time.

I came across this 7 piece soul/dub outfit out of New Zealand a few days ago and cannot get "Boondigga" out of my head.

At first, I was convinced the vocalist for the track was Jamie Lidell but after a closer listen, found that Freddy's main vocalist has a much smoother tone. It really sets the perfect mood for nice chill day or a lazy evening, it's so easy to just listen to. Over the past few years they've secured a worldwide fanbase through sheer hard work and savy independent CD and Vinyl Releases. I feel so behind, I can't believe i've been missing out on them till now.

Nearly four years ago, the Freddy’s traveled to London in December 2005 and were on-hand to pick up the Worldwide Album Of The Year at the Radio 1 Gilles Peterson Worldwide Music Awards 2005, as voted by fans worldwide that tune in to the tastemakers show on the BBC.

Freddy’s dominated the 2005 New Zealand Music Awards, taking Best Group, Best Album, Best New Zealand Roots Group and the Peoples Choice Award. On December 18, 2005 the group were awarded the Worldwide “Album of the Year Award”, as voted for by over 20,000 listeners of Gilles Peterson’s BBC Radio 1 Worldwide show. Fat Freddy’s Drop have now released their second major studio album, Dr Boondigga & The Big BW - shipping GOLD on the first day of release on 26th May 2009. Featuring Art & Design by Otis Frizzell, the album features nine fresh phat tracks that span soul, dub, reggae, techno, blues flavors.

Our friends at Indiekrush, Pulsar and Deep Cover will be hosting the monthly Say What?! party tomorrow night @ Beauty Bar. This month's lineup is absolutely awesome might I add, with live performances from Dream Sequence, The Start(L.A), Neon Facade, and The Day After on the back patio. Inside, the dance floor's gonna packed with DJ sets from Vegas Banger, Roccanova, Grimehaus, and a 2 hour set from 10PM-12AM from Bass & Treble. A photobooth will be available to capture your hot drunken celebrity moment with that guy/girl you said you would be never be seen with... so I highly recommend NOT missing out tomorrow night.

Stuck In A Funk

When you drive my particular Suzuki Esteem, you need to have some esteem of your own. It has a lot of cosmetic damage, the air conditioning doesn't work (I live in Las Vegas), the CV joints feel like they're about to rip out the sides of my wheels; it smells like cat piss, etc.

To make matters worse, the CD player doesn't work, and the radio receiver doesn't spit out any signal from iPods, either. So generally all inhabitants of the Esteem are going to be sweating out salt bricks, whilst their skin breathes a in a warm, rejuvenating piss mist. Luckily 88.1 has a very good format, especially on Thursdays, completely and utterly solving all the issues previously important with my whip.

"Classic Thursdays," is a lot of soul, funk, and R&B, and lord knows that I can always use some more of that in my life (and will probably be talking about it more often). One of the groups that I've been feeling recently is Cameo.

Cameo started out as the New York City Players in 1974, boasting 23 members. Their songs during this era are mostly funk smashes, but some of their stuff trends off into the disco range. Their style definitely Rick James'ed out during the 80s, too, as the band thinned out into 5 main members. In 1986, they released a classic that would later be sung in cacophonous tribute by dorky white guys in karaoke bars everywhere, "Word Up."

"Get Lucky," Two words that ring so loud in the minds and imaginations of anyone that's ever thought about coming to this place I call home (for now). It's all about hitting that Jackpot (literally & figuratively).

I wonder if when I move away from Las Vegas, my change of taste will move on to something else? Something so..well, not in your face, something maybe a little bit not as loud, or possibly something a bit more obscure. Vegas tends to influence my electro creations into a raving frenzy, maybe it's the lights, nightlife, insomnia, and the fact that a good grip of the lil' hipsters all over the place tend to be infatuated with those straight bangers. Guess we gotta give them what they want.

I feel like I'm always playing catch-up. Here's one thats long overdue. Originally done almost 2 months ago, a remix of Bang Gang's Damn Arms! first single Destination Pt. 1. I worked on the remix during a 2 days span while I had come down with Swine Flu (so I thought). Haha, no joke. Grayson was a witness, he'll confirm it. I thought I'd take a fresh take on the intro and record some guitars to kinda move it in a different direction before the bass hook comes in. The breaks are nice and the dynamics work out really well. Enjoy!

GLOW - Arizona Summer Massive

This weekend marks the annual GLOW SUMMER MASSIVE in Phoenix Arizona and by the the looks of the big names and heavy weights on the flyer, it's gonna be a crazy event. 4 stages and over 40 DJ's with an expected crown in the thousands. Arizona is renown for its huge dance culture following and I am almost sure that the turnout out is going to be way more than expected, even with the details of the venue still under wraps till the night of.

This will be the first Massive Bass & Treble has been asked to be a part of and honestly, we're all not sure what to expect. I'll be spinning a late set on the "Vegas" stage, directly after DJ Paul G. I've got a bangin mix in mind with lots of that sticky funky stuff, so hopefully the kids are receptive and have a great time.

The DJ's spinning the event include styles ranging from Dnb and Hardcore all the way to Electro, Breaks and Miami Bass, it should definitely keep the crowd on their toes as they venture from room to room.

Thursday February 26th marks the the Las Vegas debut of Brooklyn based duo, French Horn Rebellion, and frankly...we can't wait! With production duties shared between the two brothers, they concoct a fabulous blend of synthpop with witty lyrics and danceable backdrops that will not fail to have you dancing and singing the hooks for the rest of the month. Uno Momentum Sound Collective will be hosting the party with musical support with DJ sets from Las Vegas producer, Ex Dinosaur and a set by Bass & Treble. The Hotel is located fairly close to Las Vegas Blvd. across the street from the Hard Rock Hotel on Harmon Ave. Admission is free with an RSVP before 8PM the night off and then goes up to $5 before 9 with an RSVP. Today happens to be Ms Arulpragasm's bday so i thought it proper to give up some mad props to this super talented, intelligent, hella sexy female we all know as M.I.A. For a girl looking like she just turned 22, it's hard to believe she's now the big three oh! Frankly...Someone like her, it only adds to her appeal. She's been a busy woman ever since her genre-bending album Arular was released in 2005. She's toured the world, collabed and kicked it with the dopest and coolest producers and groups out there and now she's back again supporting the release of her upcoming release named "Kala." Unlike her previous record, there are all sorts of collabs and contributions on Kala with guests including Switch, DJ Blaqstar, Diplo, Timbaland, and Three 6 Mafia. If that isn't ridiculous news, i don't know what is. In Stores August 8th, Kala will comprise of 12 tracks and an additional 3 bonus tracks only in Japan, and if this release blows up just as much as Arular did in '05 you can bet your bottom dollar that M.I.A. & crew are gonna rewrite the books on the future of electro and hip hop. Somehow she can seamlessly bridge the gap between world music, dance hall, hip hop, cultural awareness, politics, miami bass, and rap into one crazy mix that can only be described as crunk as fuck!

This weekend she'll be playing the Siren Festival in Brooklyn, followed by a gig at Studio B. The big show of the summer being Lollapalooza in Chicago, which will be a fantastic show considering the huge lineup of great bands that are playing this year. As for myself, I shouldn't have left the east coast, my only hope is to catch her in San Francisco in September. We'll blaze! gotta score some of that purp!

A Drink And A Quick Decision

Every so often a group comes along that combines all the best music you grew up with together with a giddy hunger to push the envelope forwards into the future. That combine the angular guitars, pounding basslines and heady euphoria of New Order and the Mondays with the metropolitan nouse and witty introspection of bands like Blur. Grand National are that band . A pair of young Londoners releasing some of the best experimental pop songs the UK has produced In far too long. The British national saving grace, indeed.

This summer, Grand National has been spending their time in NYC playing the occasional acoustic set and getting ready for their sophomore full-length release "A Drink & A Quick Decision," which in fact is already available to the public via Itunes and other online distributers but the actual record will be released on Sept 10th which will include remixes, superb packaging and artwork, as well as additional multimedia. There’s a darker more obviously electro sound on some tracks, which may well lead to more Depeche Mode comparisons when the reviewers get their pens out. Others have an even more live instrumental sound than the songs of ‘KTNH’, perhaps influenced by the Grand National live shows that have evolved since the debut. On the live front, Grand National’s 6-piece band drew praise from both critics and fans during several sold out U.S. shows in support of Kicking The National Habit. While previous stops were limited to New York, Los Angeles and SXSW, Grand National promises to bring their magic stateside for an extensive tour around the release of A Drink And A Quick Decision.

Jade Mcnelis

The fresh new face of Montreal's notoriously eclectic music scene, which Jade is still relatively new to considering the Tallahassee native relocated only a year ago. Discovered while opening for Stars, she made some friends and got the invite and less than a year later recorded and released her first EP named All The Fables with help from Murray from the Dears on guitar and Chris Seligman from Stars co-producing. She has signed with Good Fences, an indie label i'm assuming was established by friends of Stars mainly because the only other band also signed is Memphis, which happens to be Stars singer, Torquill Campbell's side-project.

For a mere 20 years of age, her voice and songwriting technique are mature and we'll versed. The intrumentation and arrangements are actually quite lovely, shying away from the more often than not drab dynamics and song flow that similar female vocalists and artists find consuming their work. I definately encourage all to check her out, if you're a fan of Emily Haines, Stars, Amy Milan, Mirah, Sparklehorse, or The Dears...chances are you'll enjoy what you hear. She's a sweet girl, I recently xchanged a few emails with her and its nice to see talented young people doing their part for our music community and generation, culturally and artistically. For all those electrojunkies out there, i hope you folks have picked up Simian Mobile Disco's debut album, attack decay sustain. Released June 18th on Witchita Recordings, which is also home to Peter Bjorn & John, the defunct Desaparecidos, Bloc Party, The Cribs, Her Space Holiday and Clap Your Hands And Say Yea just to name a few. The record is loaded with copius amounts of badass hooks and catchy synth arrangements. This month they're also going to be releasing the Simian Mobile Disco EP which should be off the hook as well. Below is new track on the upcoming EP simply dubbed "3 Pin Dip." Below that is a video for their single "Believe." A great vid, reminds of the faukin pikeys in Snatch. "dya like dags?"

Its been 2 years since the Constantines last release Tournament Of Hearts and its good to see they were back on tour this spring playing a string of Canadian shows as well as a dates in the northeast in April. This summer has them on the bill for a few shows in Calgary, the Scene Festival in St. Catherines Ontario as well a show in new Brunswick, But more importantly The Cons are gonna be in the studio recording their next release in August.
